The first official training of the Sakhalin-2020 World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup was held on the competition course on Saturday.

The athletes have started their preparations for the upcoming downhill race, which will be held on February 12. Among those who have already tried the competition course are the athletes from the USA, Norway, Poland, Austria, Italy, France, Slovakia and Russia.

"I live in Alaska, still even there such severe frost is very rare. However, I’m very pleased with the course. It’s always a pleasure to try a new slope in a new place. I’m going to do my best at the competition," said USA sit skier Andrew Kurka.

Not everyone was freezing on the slopes, like Kurka.

"Such cold is rather common in Norway, though I didn’t expect it to be like this in Sakhalin. I guess it’s just my lack of knowledge about your region. Now I’m practicing in downhill here, but planning to try your other slopes in free style," said Norway's Jesper Pedersen, the overall Crystal Globe winner in the last two seasons.

The official trainings will continue on February 10 and 11. All the latest news, photos and video from the Sakhalin-2020 World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup is available on http://worldcup-sakhalin.org/
